Ways To Keep Your Hot Air Plastic Welder In Top Condition

2022/3/17
Proper use and maintenance can keep your hot air plastic welder in top operating condition. Use these 6 preventative maintenance tips to prevent plastic welder downtime, maintain peak performance, and extend tool life expectancy.

1. Clean tools regularly

After each use, make sure to clean the filter and any obstructions in the nozzle. Regular cleaning prevents the buildup of molten plastic and debris, which can restrict airflow, cause temperature fluctuations and inconsistencies, and cause components to burn out.

Wear protective gloves and goggles when cleaning the nozzle. Then, while the nozzle is still hot, scrape up the molten plastic with a stainless steel or brass wire brush. and keep it away from your body until the nozzle looks smooth (avoid touching).

When cleaning the filter, you should use mild soap, water, silica gel, or compressed air to remove the blockage.

2. Apply an air filter

Air filters keep dust, debris, and other contaminants out of the tool. When working in a dirty environment, be sure to use a filter to prevent unwanted material from entering and clogging the tool's air intake or heating element.

however, keep in mind that standard hot air tool air filters are not effective at removing all types of contaminants. Special filters must be used in cases where your tool is exposed to harsh dust such as metal, conductive, or moisture.

3. Choose the right nozzle

The wrong nozzle on a plastic welder can restrict airflow and cause heat to flow back inside the tool. This hot air backup can overheat and damage components and potentially damage other parts of the machine.

Work with an IHS representative to ensure that the nozzle you purchase is the perfect fit for the plastic welder's intended use.

4. Cool your tools - every time

To prolong its life, the heating element of a hot air tool needs to be cooled gradually after each use. This is done by blowing cold air until it reaches ambient temperature.

Carefully review the instructions for the plastic welder. It should come with detailed instructions on how to properly cool and shut down the tool. Make sure to cool the tool after each use.

5. Use the correct power supply

In order for hot air plastic welders to work properly, they need the correct power source. Too much power can damage the tool, while too little power can negatively affect its ability to generate hot air at a consistent volume and temperature.

Find the minimum power requirements on the tool's instruction manual or on its label, and make sure your power supply can consistently deliver enough power. If you have soldering issues, use these tips to start troubleshooting your power supply.

6. Store properly after use

When not in use, keep the plastic welder in the storage case. The enclosure is designed to prevent accidental tool contact and to keep away from prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture, dirt, and other elements.
